Today, getting to grandma’s house may be a little more complicated, but there are still ways you can make it less stressful.

Try these holiday travel tips and sample meditation to make your trip more enjoyable.

Stress-Free Holiday Traveling

1.	Give yourself plenty of extra time. Staying calm is easier when you give yourself plenty of lead time. Leave the house a little earlier than usual.

2.	Expect to run into snags. That extra time will come in handy if you miss a connecting flight. Keep an extra change of clothes with you in case some luggage gets lost.

3.	Pack light. If possible, ship your gifts directly to the recipients so you have fewer suitcases to wrangle. Get in the habit of using a single carry-on bag.

4.	Travel during off-peak hours. Early mornings, late nights, and the middle of the week may be less crowded. Shorter lines are a great way to reduce stress and weariness.

5.	Start out well rested. You can manage everything better after a full night’s rest. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep before your trip. Take an afternoon nap if you’ve got a late flight ahead.

6.	Bring healthy snacks. Skip the fast food at the airport. A protein bar or a bag of homemade trail mix with nuts and dry cereal will give you more nutrition and energy.

7.	Limit alcohol and caffeine. Take it easy with the free cocktails. Flying is dehydrating, so alcohol and caffeine aggravate the effects. They can also make it more difficult to meditate. Drink more water instead.

8.	Use portable meditation props. Airlines generally disapprove of lighting up incense but will welcome less intrusive props. Bring a string of wooden beads you can use for counting or load a favorite image onto your smart phone or tablet.

Sometimes the holidays seem to get away from us. You get too busy to enjoy the simple aspects that make the holidays so special. Marketing messages barrage us from every corner. We forget that Christmas isn’t about buying the latest and greatest toy or device. If you want to get back to basics, consider having a fun, old-fashioned Christmas this year.

Caroling

There’s nothing more old-fashioned than Christmas caroling. Gather a group of friends or join a community or church group. Dress warmly, brush up on your carol lyrics, and make it a special night. Plan to go out for cocoa and treats afterward. It may become a tradition your family looks forward to every year.

Christmas Lights

All around your community, families try to outdo each other with the holiday lights. Some resemble the Griswolds with crazy over-the-top scenes and enough lights to see their home from the moon. Others put out a beautiful display. Take your family for a night walk or drive around your community to enjoy the holiday lights. You can make a game of it to find the most beautiful display or the craziest display.

Decorating

Children love to decorate the holiday tree. Put on some holiday music – Bing Crosby, anyone? Let your children hang the ornaments. In fact, going out to cut down the holiday tree can be an event all by itself. You can get cocoa at the tree lot, take a sleigh ride and sing carols. Once home, children can hang the ornaments or make decorations for the home. It’s great old-fashioned Christmas fun.

Play Outside

Don’t forget the joys to be had outside during the holiday season – ice skating, sledding, snow angels and forts and of course making snowmen. Bundle the family up and head outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Let your children decide what the activity is and then support them.

Christmas doesn’t have to be all hustle and bustle. It doesn’t have to be about the gifts and material things. It can be completely about the special holiday time with family and friends. This year, take steps to take Christmas back. Have fun and engage in old-fashioned holiday activities. Your family will remember this holiday for years to come. And who knows – maybe you’ll start a whole new tradition.

However, humans are not bears and there’s a lot of fun to be had outside. This Christmas season, take your family outdoors, get some sunshine and have some good old-fashioned family fun. Here are five ways to have outdoor family fun this Christmas.

#1 Snowball - This is essentially a good game of touch, or tackle, football in the snow. Get everyone dressed warmly from head to toe and head outside. If you have enough folks to get eleven people on a team, that’s great. Otherwise, divide the group evenly. Draw a goal in the snow by digging a trench.

You will also want to mark the half-way point. If you can get one team to wear red snow hats and the other to wear green snow hats, all the better. It’ll be easier to remember who is on your team. If not, no worries. It’s all about fun and playing in the snow. Use the same rules as football and have fun.

#2 Sledding – Sledding is fun for all ages and you don’t need a fancy sled to have fun. Often, the lid of a garbage can or a cardboard box can do the trick. Of course, if you have a large plastic saucer sled then it’s rip-roaring fun. Find the biggest, fastest hill and enjoy.

#3 Build a family snowman – This is a great outdoor activity for little kids. They love to make snowmen. The adults and older children can be responsible for pushing the snowball around when it gets too large for the little ones to manage. They can also do the heavy lifting. Young children can be responsible for finding items to adorn the snowman, or woman, with.

#4 Snow forts and snow angels – Who doesn’t like to make a snow angle or build a fort? If you live in a snowy area it’s almost a required outdoor activity.

#5 Snowy obstacle course - Build ramps, hurdles and other obstacles in the snow and challenge each other to run the course. The fastest time wins. If you don’t live in a snowy area you can enjoy this activity using other items in nature.

You can also simply enjoy a hike, walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the Christmas lights or sing carols to your neighbors. There are a number of outdoor activities to enjoy during the Christmas season. Find one that’s right for your family. Create new family traditions, enjoy spending time together and make it a Christmas to remember.

If your house is party central this year, here are some ideas for party games. The entire family can get involved.

While you are attending all of the office parties and church functions, don’t forget family time. If you have a lot of immediate family in the area, plan on getting together for the holidays. Even if you are attending another family-oriented party, games are a great way to break the ice amongst people who you don’t know.

It’s not too hard to think of party ideas. Some are simply games you have already played but with a holiday theme. Whatever games you play, be sure that you have prizes for the winners.

1. Christmas Word Search – Make several copies for both kids and adults. You can find holiday word searches puzzles on the Internet and in bookstores. Using a timer, give everyone two minutes to find as many words from the list as they can.

2. Name that Holiday Tune – Divide into teams. Someone who is not playing (or who will be the game show host) will think up names for holiday songs and write them on pieces of paper. One person from each team has to take a paper and then hum the tune for the rest of their team. The teammates have one minute to name the holiday tune. If they can’t the chance passes to the other team.

3. Holiday Win, Lose or Draw – Remember this show? One team member chooses a phrase and then has to draw it for the other members to try and guess. Since it is Christmas, make all of the phrases something to do with the holiday season. Your team gets 90 seconds to guess the right answer. If they don’t, play passes to the other team.

4. Holiday Family Feud – Again divide into teams. Ask a question of two opposing team mates. The first one to answer correctly with the highest answer on the board wins control. The rest of the game proceeds just like the game show. Remember to use holiday categories (such as “Name the twelve days of Christmas?”).

5. Christmas Auction House – Instead of giving assorted prizes for winning games, give game money, reindeer bucks. At the end of the game session, each person with money can bid on a gift that they want from the gift table. Everything will be wrapped so they don’t know what they are bidding for. Buy enough gifts for everyone to take home something, even those without money (give them their gift at the door on the way out).

Can you think of more ideas? These are only a few to get you started. When you invite guests to the party, ask them to bring materials for at least one party game. You will have a blast until the wee hours of the morning.

Here are some quick and easy ways to create a festive mood.

#1 Grab a few candles, place them in the center of your table and light them. The twinkling adds instant ambiance. If you have a decorative plate, stand, or even a few branches to place underneath or around the candles it’ll look even better.

#2 Holiday ornaments – Collect a few of your favorite solid-colored holiday ornaments and place them in a clear glass container. Grab ones with complimentary colors like silver and red, or collect ornaments that are all one color but varying sizes to add effect.

#3 Spruce up an old wreath by adding small ornaments to the boughs. Attach them with wire through the back of the wreath to ensure they stay in place.

#4 White Christmas lights – String white Christmas lights up a stairwell banister. Hang them around a doorway, around a mirror, or adorn a plant in your home with the small sparkling lights.

#5 String cranberries and/or popcorn and hang on your holiday tree with white lights for an old-fashioned holiday tree.

#6 Fill a glass bowl with holiday fruit. Pomegranates, oranges, and pears are in abundance during the holidays.

#7 Gather pine cones and string them for a decorative touch. Place them in a basket on your mantle or table, or add glitter or sparkly spray paint for a more festive look.

#8 Purchase a bag or two of cranberries. Place them in a clear glass bowl filled with water. Add a few small red votive candles and light them. The candles will float amongst the red berries. You can also fill a bowl with the red berries, skip the water, and position the candles amongst the berries.

#9 Display your holiday cards by hanging them over the fire place or around a doorway.

#10 Gather branches from your yard or the tree farm. Place them on the wall over your fireplace, create a wreath from the branches by weaving them together or use them as the foundation for a centerpiece.

#11 Gather candy canes both large and small in a tall vase or clear glass. Tie bows around the middle of the candy canes and display.

#12 Wrap mirrors and doors with wrapping paper. They’ll look like giant gifts.

When you use your imagination, you can come up with tons of great ideas to decorate your home this holiday. Take a look around your home and yard. What do you already have that you can use to decorate? Keep it simple and have fun!

There’s just something special about the twinkling lights, the smell of pine in the air and the festivity. If you’re tired of fancy decorations or want to take your holiday decorating in a new direction, why not go au natural? Give your home a pure and simple holiday feel this Christmas.

Pine Cones

Pine cones are a natural element of the holidays. People often place pine trees in their home and decorate them for the holidays, so it’s only natural that pine cones are also part of the season. You can go on a family hunt for pine cones in the woods and make it a true homemade decoration. You can also purchase pine cones at most craft stores during the holidays.

Decorating with pine cones is simple and can be quite diverse. You can make wreaths and table centerpieces with a hot glue gun, a bit of wire and pine cones. You can be really organic and set them in a bowl or basket to display. Or you can get a bit festive with them and use glitter or spray paint to add flair. Imagine a crystal bowl of gilded pine cones. It’s an inexpensive and simple craft with a lot of drama.

Branches

In addition to pine cones, pine branches can make wonderfully simple decorations. Again, you can collect pine branches on a hike with your family in the woods. You can also find them at your local tree nursery. They often trim the branches after a customer has cut down their tree. The trimming is part of the tree packaging to make it easy to haul the tree home. The extra branches usually end up being mulched, so you should be able to take a few home without a problem.

You can also purchase real or fake pine tree branches at your local craft store. Also like pine cones you can use them to create a simple centerpiece or wreath. Or you can get creative with them. Add a few pine cones, shiny ornaments or a small bird for extra flair. Additionally, consider hanging the boughs on the wall for a focal point during the holidays.

Candles

Candles are great for setting a mood. They can be festive, solemn or simply beautiful. Candles collected in groups of like colors are best. White, symbolizing peace, and the twinkling effect of small candles can be quite lovely. Red candles, green, silver or gold candles can be festive. Group them in varying sizes for aesthetic appeal. Place them on tables and in windows for the most ambiance. Take care to keep a fire extinguisher nearby and always put out your candles before leaving your home or going to sleep.

Snowflakes

If you’re skilled with paper cutting and folding, the fun childhood activity of making paper snowflakes can take on a new look. Cut out elaborate snowflakes in beautiful paper and display on a table or hang in a doorway.

Holiday decorating doesn’t have to be bright, colorful and noisy. It can be simple, pure and quiet too. If you’re looking for new ideas to decorate your home this holiday, look to nature and the items you already have in your home.

What do you do with them after Christmas is over? Instead of adding to the trash pile, use those cards to create new ones that you can send out.

How can you do that, you might ask? Most people sign their names or have their Christmas cards personalized each year. But, you can use those cards to create new ones to give out the next year. Here are some ideas that can keep those cards circulating.

1. Cut the front picture off of the card. Most Christmas cards have quite decorative pictures on them. Glue the pictures on the front of a piece of construction paper. Fold it in half or fourths so the card can fit in an envelope.

2. Add more glitter. Some cards already come decorated with glitter but after a season in a box in the attic, some of it will rub off. Dot the front of your card with glue and sprinkle more glitter on the picture.

3. For more grown-up cards, use card stock. You can also matte these pictures for a fancier look. Then, affix them to the front of the card stock. Now you have a one-of-a-kind creation.

4. Create a collage card. Cut out portions of several old cards and put them together on the front of a piece of card stock. Add embellishments like the ones used for scrapbooking. Choose ornaments, tiny Christmas trees, small presents and the like to finish decorating the card.

5. Use craft scissors to create decorative edges on your cards. Who says that a card has to have straight edges?

6. Create construction paper cut-outs to add to your cards. Use green, brown, red and white to draw snowflakes, reindeer, Christmas trees and beautiful ribbons. Glue the pictures to the inside and back cover of the cards.

7. Staple an extra sheet of heavy paper inside of an existing card. Glue the edges down so that you won’t see any writing underneath. This becomes the place where you can write your special greeting to a friend or family member.

8. Spray cards with fragrant perfumes or room sprays. This works better for colored cards so that any fragrance droplets don’t stain the card. Use a fragrance that exemplifies winter: woodsy, pine, cinnamon, pumpkin and the like.

9. Laminate your new creations. Laminating protects your card after you have added stickers, embellishments and things like dried leaves.

10. Add family holiday portraits to the front of old cards. You may have to cut your picture down to fit flush with the edges of the old card.

Trying to be a little frugal this Christmas? Use old Christmas cards and these ideas above to create new cards to hand out this year.

Such stressful things that might occur is that the best cheap holiday deals are all taken. You could no longer find the cheapest holiday packages. Worse is if you cannot book yourself for flights or accommodation at your desired date because there’s just no available one.

Preparing for your backpack and other things you plan to bring can be stressful, too if you prepare at the last minute. Plus you have to blend in with all the busy crowd who are also doing some last minute shopping before the holidays.

To avoid these kinds of stressful things, you have to plan and prepare early. Here are the things you need to remember:

- Book as early as 5 months before your desired trip as possible. Aside from securing yourself a slot in air transportation and accommodation, you can get the best cheap holiday packages offered by travel agencies and airline companies. This means you also have to make early arrangements for hotels, airport parking, local transportation in your destination, and other necessary things.

- Pack your things early. It would be better if you make a list of the things you want and need to bring for your entire holiday vacation. Last minute packing might make you forget something.

- Check the weather forcast in your destination at the time of your trip to help you prepare of any delays that may happen.

- To avoid overweight luggage, pack only the things you need and keep it at minimal to also avoid paying for extra charges. Contact your airline and inquire the luggage weight limit and travel surcharge.

- Familiarize yourself with the Transportation Security Administration 3-1-1 rules. This will help you get through security checkpoints fast and easy.

- To avoid long lines, print your boarding pass at home if possible. This is allowable to most airlines so check on their website for some information. Also, check-in 24 hours before your departure.

- Bring some of your own entertainment like reading materials, portable mp3 players, or PSP. This will keep yourself busy during times of boredom.

- Always check your flight schedule. Your departure or arrival time can possibly be changed since delays are common during the holiday season. If you asked someone to pick you up at the airport, be sure to tell them of any changes in your flight schedule.

- To ensure that you do not miss your flight, go to the airport very early. If you are taking an international flight, you should be there at least 3 hours before the scheduled departure of your flight. While if you are taking domestic flights, be sure to go to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight scedule.

- Do not forget to bring valid ID’s to avoid unnecessary delays.

These tips will surely help you avoid problems that may occur during your trip. Instead, this will give you a stress-free holiday trip that you will surely enjoy.
